The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) has formally ratified a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Lancaster University in the United Kingdom, strengthening a strategic partnership that advances internationalisation, research collaboration and global academic engagement.
The agreement formalises and deepens an evolving relationship between the two institutions while providing a framework for expanding collaborative research, staff and student mobility, academic capacity development and knowledge exchange. It also aligns with UKZN’s broader commitment to building meaningful global partnerships that enhance research excellence and help address complex societal challenges.
The ratification coincided with a visit by a Lancaster University delegation as part of the broader EU–Africa Initiative, which seeks to strengthen cooperation between African and European higher education institutions, promote collaborative research and foster academic exchange. The delegation included Professor Kirk Semple, Director of International Engagement at Lancaster University’s Environment Centre, and Dr Akan Odon, Director of Partnerships.
Hosted in the Govan Mbeki Room on UKZN’s Westville Campus, the New Horizons Workshop brought together academics and researchers from across the University to engage with Lancaster University colleagues and explore opportunities for future collaboration. Discussions focused on identifying areas of mutual research interest, strengthening academic networks and creating pathways for sustainable institutional partnerships.
Welcoming delegates, UKZN Executive Director for Corporate Relations, Dr Normah Zondo, said the formalisation of the partnership marked an important step in deepening cooperation between the two institutions.
“This partnership reflects our shared commitment to academic excellence, internationalisation, research innovation and the strengthening of global networks that create meaningful impact for both our institutions and the communities we serve.”
The workshop provided a platform for UKZN academics to gain insights into Lancaster University’s global engagement strategy, internationally recognised research funding model and approaches to collaborative research development. Participants explored opportunities for joint research initiatives, academic exchanges, capacity-building programmes and international funding partnerships.
Representatives from Lancaster University highlighted the institution’s commitment to interdisciplinary research and partnerships that generate tangible societal, economic and environmental impact. The discussions emphasised the importance of building sustainable research ecosystems that support academics throughout the research lifecycle, from proposal development and funding acquisition to implementation and impact measurement.
Professor Semple noted that successful international partnerships are grounded in research that extends beyond academic outputs to address real-world challenges.
“It’s not just about the papers, although that is important. It’s also about ensuring that research emerging from these ecosystems delivers meaningful benefits for society, the economy and, as an environmental scientist, the environment.”
A key focus of the engagement was the value of collaborative proposal development and strategic partnership-building in strengthening research competitiveness and unlocking international funding opportunities. The workshop also showcased institutional support mechanisms that enable researchers to navigate increasingly complex global research environments.
The newly ratified MoU is expected to enhance opportunities for joint research projects, academic exchanges, innovation, capacity development and international funding collaborations. It further positions UKZN to expand its global footprint while advancing impactful research that addresses local, continental, and global priorities.
The partnership represents another important milestone in UKZN’s internationalisation journey and reinforces the University’s commitment to fostering strategic global relationships that enrich teaching, learning, research and innovation while advancing its vision of African scholarship with global impact.
