The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) International Relations Office hosted a cultural city tour for international students, providing an opportunity to familiarise themselves with Durban, the vibrant coastal city in which four of the University’s five campuses are located.

Designed as both an educational and social experience, the tour aimed to introduce students to Durban’s diverse cultural heritage, local attractions and unique lifestyle while creating opportunities for them to connect and build friendships beyond the classroom.

The day began with a scenic boat cruise around Durban Harbour, offering students the opportunity to experience the city from the water while taking in panoramic views of the coastline, harbour and surrounding cityscape. The excursion continued to uShaka Marine World, one of Durban’s most popular attractions, where students explored one of the city’s premier tourism destinations.

The group then travelled to Mkhize Rooftop in KwaMashu township, where they enjoyed refreshments and experienced local hospitality. Although the traditional buffet was scheduled for later in the day, the students embraced the opportunity to engage with the community and support local traders by purchasing fresh fruit from street vendors.

The culinary journey continued at Mojo’s in Mayville, where the students sampled a traditional food platter featuring a variety of local dishes. The meal proved to be one of the highlights of the excursion, with students enthusiastically embracing Durban’s rich culinary traditions.

Beyond sightseeing and food, the cultural trip provided international students with a valuable opportunity to engage with Durban’s communities, traditions and everyday experiences. The excursion formed part of the International Student Support Initiative’s efforts to enhance the international student experience through cultural exchange, community engagement and a stronger sense of belonging.

For the students, the excursion was more than a city tour. It was an opportunity to explore, connect and create lasting memories while discovering the diverse character of Durban.
